Missing a badge on your car? Try Atlantis Classics for a fantastic range of high quality classic car badges and other motoring merchandise. atlantisclassics.co.uk

I have rebuilt the gearbox, the radio, the woodwork, re-stuffed the front seats, ordered a new loom from www.autosparks.co.uk, tracked down appropriate carpet and headlining and had various dials repaired by www.speedograph-richfield.co.uk

I found the car ran straight into the red in top gear, it felt terribly under geared, so on the advice of BOC member Andy Gibbs I contacted Mike Robinson, 20 Wood Lane, Timperley, Altringham WA15 7QB Tel: 0161 980 4870 who, amongst many other things, makes an overdrive conversion that fits in without requiring chassis mods and includes a new propshaft. He should have a website, doesn’t but he does have loads of spares for Bristol’s. I’ve ordered one.

Floor and Interior Panel Mounting Screws for 400 and presumably later models

RREC Member Philip Ashby has had a batch of the above screws made in stainless steel, which is a much more suitable material as it avoids corrosion and means they are easier to remove when necessary for service or rebuild.

I think most people accept that these cars are going to outlast their owners but perhaps hadn’t considered that the more care we take with the work we do and the materials we choose, the easier it will be for future owners to keep the cars in the best possible condition. Conversely, if we don’t do the job properly, we will not be remembered kindly.

If you need or think you may need these screws and the are 35 Pence each plus VAT and carriage then please order as soon as you can so that as big a batch as possible can be built and costs saved.

You can contact Philip directly at Philip.Ashby@orange.net

WARNING - PerTronix Electronic Ignition Failure

The extremely elegant electronic ignition conversion for the ‘46-’59 cars sold by www.Classicheads.com and others is made in the USA by PerTronix. I fitted one five years ago and it has just failed after 5,500 miles. It cost me about £240 because I bought a spare module. My company is www.avihifi.com and my business partner is a one time Defence Avionics Engineer who worked with the man that designed the Silver Shadow Electronic Ignition Unit. This was larger because it was designed decades ago, but the laws of Physics have not changed and Martin believes that the PerTronix unit is not sufficiently well cooled. The Shadow one had an Aluminium base that couple to the Distributor, so was far better in this respect.

PerTronix referred me to the Brit Distributor who gave a cell phone number via his answerphone and Frank at Classic Heads expects me to pay over £100 for another.

To make matter worse PerTronix’s price for a replacement is considerably more for the R-R one than any others they offer, so it looks like the usual rip off, so I withdraw my recommendation because the points system is excellent if maintained and will last a great deal longer.
