Smiths Electric Clock overhaul

These clocks are early electric, beautifully made, poor timekeepers, not particularly reliable and, to make it worse,  there are no spares left. However friend David Chaundy agreed to overhaul mine because he had a few scrap ones he could rob for parts and because they can now be made reliable by putting a small diode across the coil to prevent arcing that originally dirtied the contacts very quickly and stopped it.

Those of you familiar with the site will know that David has meticulously rebuilt his Cloud 2 and is currently in the middle of rebuilding his 1924 Austin 12/4 that he brought back from New Zealand. He is a true craftsman and I'm very lucky that he could spare the time to sort out what can be a very frustrating clock.
